635. 2012 HIERVANDAAN, Solms Delta. Franschhoek, South Africa
Alcohol Percentage: 14.5%
Area: Solms Delta are based in Franschhoek but this includes grapes from vineyards elsewhere, hence the generic 'Western Cape' on the label
Grape Variety: 37% Grenache, 28% Syrah, 27% Mourvedre, 8% Carignan; a proportion of the grapes were desiccated (dried) on the vine before picking
Producer: The Solms' ancestors were Dutch aristocrats and this wine is named after Princess Amalie who was in fact grandmother of William III of England (William of Orange). Solms-Delta is now an innovative and exciting family-owned estate, experimenting with all sorts of unusual wine styles and techniques.
Old Bridge Rating: Big and brawny - not the most subtle red wine, but there is real 'matter' here
