Full-bodied whites (over £15) - AMBER WINE, Cullen. Margaret River, Australia

2014 AMBER WINE, Cullen. Margaret River, Australia

Bin: 328
Alcohol Percentage: 15%
Area: Margaret River is Western Australia's best know region, for good reason - the mild maritime climate produces elegant wines with natural freshness
Grape Variety: 64% Semillon, 36% Sauvignon, fermented ON SKINS (like a red wine) for up to a month, before 4 months maturation in French oak
Producer: Vanya Cullen has been the area's standard bearer for quality winemaking and biodynamic viticulture for some time now. Some consider biodynamics more witchcraft than science. What is very clear when visiting Cullen is that the vineyards are in extraordinarily good health - and the results in the bottle always seem to justify the means
Old Bridge Rating: Unusually good 'orange wine' (white wine fermented on skins). There is none of the dirty or oxidised characters that ruin so many examples. It's still a curiosity, but one worth trying
Press Reviews: 92 points, wwwjancisrobinson.com -
Very light, copper-tinged orange. Poached pear, tangerine, honey and vanilla on the toasty, deeply perfumed nose. Smooth, broad and fleshy on the palate, offering powerful orchard and pit fruit and vanilla pastry flavours sharpened by suggestions of candied ginger and smoky minerals. Shows the heft of a red wine but the vibrancy and bite of a white--or pink--one. The pear and ginger notes linger with impressive tenacity on the lucid, seamless finish. While this intriguing orange wine is carrying 15% alcohol it does not come off as heavy or warm.
