2220. 2015 Now finished: GRUNER VELTLINER, Loiserberg, Loimer, Kamptal, AustriaOrganic
Alcohol Percentage: 13%
Area: Kamptal, north west of Vienna, is less famous than the Wachau but produces many of Austria's top whites. In the UK Austria is at last being recognised as a great producing country.
The Loiserberg vineyard is at 350m altitude, facing south-east, with mica slate soil
Grape Variety: 100% Grüner Veltliner, Austria's 'native' grape - capable of producing light, spritzy summer whites or, like this, a dry but rich style with the minerality and dimension of a serious white Burgundy
Producer: Fred Loimer runs his 60 hectare family estate. He went to Austria's renowned Klosterneuburg University and worked at wineries in Nahe, Germany and in Napa Valley, California, before taking over from his father in 1997. The next year he bought and renovated a a former cellar of the Haindorf Castle, near Langenlois
Old Bridge Rating: Classic Gruner - lovely balance between subtle richness and firm minerality
