235. 2012 SAINT ROMAIN, David Moret. Burgundy
Alcohol Percentage: 13%
Area: Saint Romain is a lesser-known village on the Côte de Beaune, just 5km from Meursault, tucked behind Auxey Duresses. The vineyards are higher than in the most famour villages and so, in the past, have always made a lighter, leaner style of Chardonnay.
However better winemaking and global warming have made appellations such as this increasingly relevant. It would be hard to place this in a 'lesser' location if tasted blind
Grape Variety: 100% Chardonnay, matured for a year in barrel (24% new oak)
Producer: David Moret doesn't own any vineyards, only starting to produce wine in 2000 (and you can't just buy land in the famous appellations). He buys small batches of grapes and vinifies them in his small cellar in Beaune. Unlike the négociants (merchants) of the past he makes wine just like the best small growers, using natural yeasts and not fining or filtering
