489. 2016 DOLCETTO D’ALBA, Vajra. Piedmont, Italy
Alcohol Percentage: 13%
Area: From the Langhe hills, home to Italy's most revered red wines from the Nebbiolo grape, Barolo and Barbaresco. In Piedmont Dolcetto is considered a light red, drunk with antipasti at the start of the meal. But serious Barolo producers like this tend to make it with plenty of intensity and structure, but without losing the grape's essential 'brightness.
Grapes for this wine are from vineyards in Coste di Vergne, Fossati and Pascolo in the Barolo region and in the Ravera in Nerollo region
Producer: Aldo Vajra's estate is at Vergne, close to the town of Barolo itself. He has almost 60 hectares total and is essentially a traditional producer, yet manages to coax silky fruit and rare charm from all his wines.
Old Bridge Rating: Wonderful balance of freshness and firmness; ultra food-friendly red
