LIGHT / BRIGHT REDS

Light / bright reds - CINSAULT, Craven. Stellenbosch, South Africa

2016 CINSAULT, Craven. Stellenbosch, South Africa

Alcohol Percentage: 12.5%
Area: This is from 25-year-old dry farmed bush vines at the top of the Bottleray Hills. Cinsault was an important grape in 'the old days' when it was blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, really just to soften the tannins of the former. Now it's the Cape's most trendy grape, everyone scrabbling to source the old vines to make wines of lightness and brightness, somewhere between a Grenache and a Pinot Noir
Grape Variety: 100% Cinsault, the majority fermented as whole bunches (to emphasise the aromatics) then given brief maturation in old wood
Producer: Craven was founded in 2011 by Australian Mick Craven and his South African wife Jeaninie. They are a vital part of the 'new-wave' of South African wine that has appeared recently - producers looking for less power and weight, more freshness and purity; with much lower alcohols and minimal use of sulphur dioxide (or any other addition).
Old Bridge Rating: Alarmingly low alcohol, if you consider the warmth of the region. But unlike some 'skinny' modernist reds, this does have the fruit and charm one would hope for. A great introduction to the new-wave new-world
Press Reviews: "From the Bottelaray, this is from 25 year old bush vines. It’s lively and fresh with juicy raspberry and cherry fruit (it’s the only red they destem), with real brightness. So vital and delicious." 92/100 - Jamie Goode, www.wineanorak.com
