The OLD BRIDGE
At every price level, an outstanding selection of wines chosen by John Hoskins MW
POWERFUL REDS; OLD WORLD (UNDER £15)
2010 Finished: SALICE SALENTINO, Masseria Pietrosa. Puglia, Southern Italy
Alcohol Percentage: 13%
Area: Puliga, the heel in the south of Italy
Grape Variety: 90% Negroamaro, 10% Malvasia Nero, aged without wood
Producer: A Masseria is a farm in Puglia, and the term Pietrosa means stony which applies to the low vigour soil in this area. Owned by the San Marzano co-op and made by Filippo Baccalaro
Food Match: Soft enough to drink on its own, but also a comforting accompaniment to game casserole and the like..
Old Bridge Rating: Full-bodied but soft and rounded. Extremely classy, modern example of a southern Italian red. New World ripeness and (by Italian standards) very low in tannin
