2008 Out of stock temporarily: AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA, Allegrini. Veneto, Italy
Alcohol Percentage: 15.5%
Area: Fumane, 20km north east of Verona in the Valpolicella Classico hills, 180-280m above sea level
Grape Variety: 80% Corvina, 15% Rondinella, 5% Oseleta
Producer: The Allegrini family have 90 hectares of vineyard in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico area. Family-run for many generations, they are the benchmark for quality in the area. The Amarone grapes are dried at ‘Terre di Fumane‘, with controlled temperature and humidity. They lose 40-45% of their original weight, without developing any rot or other problem 'issues'
Cellar Potential: 2012-2026. Delicious young but will mature for 20 years
Food Match: Cheese, venison, mutton - just make sure there is plenty of flavour on the plate
Old Bridge Rating: Luscious intensity - so much so you hardly notice the high tannin and high acidity, both of which will guarantee a very long future. Amarone is often a big let down (big girl's blouse?) but not here
Press Reviews: 94 points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate - "A beautifully balanced Amarone with great intensity in its dark fruit and the accompanying structure to support many years of cellaring. Hints of smoke, tar, liquorice and incense linger on the tightly wound finish. The freshness, clarity and vibrancy are first-class. This is an exquisite Amarone from Allegrini"
