NEW WORLD PINOT NOIR (OVER £15)

New World Pinot Noir - AU BON CLIMAT PINOT NOIR. Santa Maria, California.

2008 AU BON CLIMAT PINOT NOIR 'Sanford and Benedict'. Santa Rita Hills, California.

Organic

Alcohol Percentage: 13.5%
Area: Santa Rita Hills is a new area in the Santa Ynez Valley, a (relatively) cool climate area north of LA, where Burgundian and Rhone varieties predominate. Made famous by the film 'Sideways' which helped kickstart the trend for Pinot and Syrah over Cabernet and (especially) Merlot. Sanford and Benedict vineyard was re-planted with new clones recently and the fruit quality improves with every vintage
Grape Variety: 100% Pinot Noir, aged in French oak for a year
Producer: Jim Clendennen is the self-styled 'wild boy' winemaker / owner of ABC. His hippy attitude is at least partly reflected in the very 'natural' style of his wines
Cellar Potential: 2011-2016
Food Match: Gentle enough to drink on its own but also great with salmon or chicken, especially char-grilled
Old Bridge Rating: This is medium-pale, fragrant, ripe but gentle Pinot. Clearly New World in it soft fruitiness, but Burgundian in its discreet and under-stated classiness
