RHÔNE STYLE NEW WORLD (OVER £15)
2010 ZINFANDEL, Seghesio. Sonoma County, California
Alcohol Percentage: 15.5%
Area: Seghesio are based in Healdsburg, Sonoma Valley. Their Zinfandel comes from Home Ranch, River Road, Lone Oak and San Lorenzo in Alexander Valley; Cortina in Dry Creek Valley
Grape Variety: Zinfandel aged 10 months in oak (75% American oak; 25% French; 10% of the former is new oak)
Producer: For decades the Seghesio family, like many Italian immigrants, simply grew grapes for sale to other wineries. The switch to winemaking has been a huge success. They specialize in Zinfandel and a host of rarely seen Italian varieties. Zinfandel grows like a weed in warm climates, so aggressive 'canopy management' is required to tame it. Their grape-growing expertise is perhaps the secret to Seghesio's succes.
Vintage: 2010 Apparently the coolest on record over past 40 years.
Food Match: Good Zin is ripe and juicy but with enlivening, zesty freshness on the finish. Hence it can be great food wine - barbecued meats, obviously, but it's also one of the few reds to work with strong cheese. (The alcohol is very high but Zin does have to reach these levels to be truly ripe)
Press Reviews: 93 points and Editors' Choice, Wine Enthusiast: "You could use this as a teaching tool for classic Sonoma County Zinfandel. It's full-bodied, dry and spicy, with briary flavors of wild berries, mocha, tobacco, leather and exotic spices. More importantly, it's absolutely delicious. The grapes come from Seghesio's best vineyards in the Alexander and Dry Creek valleys. An astonishing value."
