The OLD BRIDGE
At every price level, an outstanding selection of wines chosen by John Hoskins MW
FRESH, DRY WHITES, UNDER £10
2009 Now finished: GODELLO, Pazo de Monterrey. Monterrei, North West Spain
Alcohol Percentage: 14%
Area: Monterrei is in Galicia, north east Spain, right on the Portugese border
Grape Variety: Godello is a native northern Spanish variety
Old Bridge Rating: Albarino is Spain's most prestigious white variety, but most recent examples seem somewhat stretched - i.e. lacking any intensity for the price. This offers better value in similar style - light, delicately aromatic, ripe but fresh. It's also perhaps a Spanish take on a fine Italian Greco or Pinot Bianco
Press Reviews: 2008 Vintage: IWSC 2010 - Silver (Best in Class).
2009 Vintage: "The 2009 vintage was great in Galicia and Pazos del Rey's 2009 Pazo de Monterrey shows why....an expressive nose of mineral, melon, baking spices, and floral notes. Crisp, ripe, and exceptionally concentrated, it displays a vibrant acid structure that leads to a lengthy, pure finish." 89 points. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate April 2010.
