POWERFUL REDS; NEW WORLD (UNDER £15)

Powerful reds; New World - CHAKALAKA, Spice Route. Swartland, South Africa

2009 CHAKALAKA, Spice Route. Swartland, South Africa

Alcohol Percentage: 14%
Area: Spice Route are based in Swartland, the warm area north of Cape Town, close to the west coast, now source of many of SA's trendiest full reds
Grape Variety: 51% Syrah, 16% Carignan, 11% Mourvedre, 11% Souzao, 8% Grenache, 2% Tannat, 1% Petite Sirah; all matured in French oak (25% new) for 13 months
Producer: Spice Route is the creation of Charles Back who also owns Fairview in Paarl and Goats do Roam. Chakalaka takes its name from a spicy South African relish
Food Match: Inevitably we suggest something spicy - a gentle chicken curry or even lamb would work; but nothing too fiery!
Old Bridge Rating: A jumble of grape varieties giving a unique and lively array of flavours. Full bodied, broad and peppery. Gold Medal and Trophy in the 2012 Decanter World Wine Awards
Press Reviews: 90 points Wine Spectator: :"The 2009 Chakalaka has a fresh bouquet with vibrant dark berried fruits, wild hedgerow and a touch of blueberry. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very good acidity and a vivacious finish of vibrant red fruits that beg another sip. For $20.00 this is great value."
