PIEDMONTESE GRAPE VARIETIES; OVER £15

Italian; Piedmontese varieties - DEAD WINEMAKERS' SOCIETY DOLCETTO, Alpha Box and Dice. Adelaide Hills, Australia

2009 Now finished: DEAD WINEMAKERS' SOCIETY DOLCETTO, Alpha Box and Dice. Adelaide Hills, Australia

Alcohol Percentage: 14.8 %
Grape Variety: 100% Dolcetto - the softer, more 'forward' of the great Piedmont grape varieties. Normally served with antipasti before the Barbera and Barolo to follow
Producer: A new venture about which we know only the following:
"Alpha Box & Dice is the brainchild of Justin, the winemaker or as he likes to say "wine tragic" and Emma Lane, the business brains behind the operation. Justin is a legend for his passionately crafted garagiste wines, eclectic style, and loveable rogue-vintner ways. So after years of making other people’s bottles notorious, Lane’s newest incarnation — his own unique wine label — has been well anticipated.
The name came from the saying "The whole box and dice" which is an Australianism for "everything or complete". The alpha part makes reference to the alphabetical layout of the range of wines and the fact most of the wines are a little alpha male in size but with just the right amount of feminine qualities.
So D is for Dolcetto, an Italian grape variety that has been sparsely scattered throughout Australian vineyards by Italian immigrants. It’s native vineyards are in Piemonte, so responds well to the cool climate of the Adelaide Hills, where Justin sources the grapes. This wine is a crowd pleaser. The low tannin content of the Dolcetto grape provides an early drinking style red that is silky smooth and has a freshness that one would expect from a white wine however still provides the fragrance and soft, round fruit flavours. The dark fruits are vibrant and full of life and will appeal to those who love a lot of soft, opulent dark berry fruit."
Old Bridge Rating: There's some of the lightness of classic Dolcetto but the accent here is on the 'dolce' (sweet) fruit. It's not actually off-dry, but the texture is beguilingly soft and luscious
