RHÔNE STYLE NEW WORLD (OVER £15)
2006 Mt EDELSTONE, Henschke. Eden Valley, South Australia
Organic
Alcohol Percentage: 14%
Area: A single vineyard in the Eden Valley (part of the hills known as the Barossa Range) which consists of river valleys and undulating hills covered with large gums, rocky outcrops and Aboriginal sites. It is a high-altitude area of between 400 and 500 metres, compared with the Barossa Valley's elevation of 200 to 300 metres. This makes for cooler nights, later ripening and more retention of freshness and distinctive varietal flavours
Grape Variety: 90 year old, un-grafted Shiraz vines matured in oak (90% new; 2/3 French, 1/3 American oak) for 21 months
Producer: The Henschke family settled in the Barossa in 1861 and now fifth-generation Stephen Henschke and his wife Prue uphold the family name and reputation, as winemaker and viticulturist respectively. Famous above all for the 'Hill of Grace', this is one of the most respected estates in Australia. All their vineyards are both organic and biodynamic.
Vintage: 2006 Rated by Henschke as one of their best ever vintages
Cellar Potential: 2012-2020. Will age, but no need to wait
Old Bridge Rating: Henschke wines went through a bit of a dip 10 or so years ago. They are now back to their best. Ultra rich but many-layered and beautifully balanced
£56.05 per bottle in a mixed case
