2004 Now finished: BANDOL, Cuvée Estagnol, La Bastide Blanche. Provence, S France
Organic
Alcohol Percentage: 15%
Area: Beautiful, trendy (typically Provencal) holiday area with some steep sloped coastal vineyards produceing intense, long-lived reds and complex rosé, predominantly from Mourvèdre
Producer: In the early 1970s Michel and Louis Bronzo acquired the property of the Bastide Blanche, with the goal of producing top Bandol wines to rival their more famous cousins in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. They have have several cuvees, depending on the vintage, however, they always use a minimum of 75% mourvèdre. Yields are kept very low, and never exceed more than 34 or 35 hl/ha
Cellar Potential: Ready now but will keep 7 or 8 more years
Old Bridge Rating: A big, broad-shouldered, very 'southern' red, with dark cherry, salami, herbs, and tar on the nose. Decant an hour in advance to get all the aromatic complexity - and drink with lamb or game
£20.66 per bottle in a mixed case
