2009 Out of stock: FLEURIE, Les Moriers, Domaine Michel Chignard. Beaujolais
Alcohol Percentage: 13%
Area: Fleurie is the most famous (simply because of its fortuitously appealing name) of the Beaujolais 'Crus' - those villages deemed the best sites in the area, and hence demanding the highest prices
Producer: Michel and son Cédric Chignard have 8 hectares of vines on a granite hillside, next to Moulin-à-Vent. Les Moriers is a vineyard of old vines in traditional 'gobelet' (free-standing bush) style
Vintage: 2009 Best year in living memory for Beaujolais
Cellar Potential: Now - 2015. Will change from strawberry-fresh to earthy and spicy, with pseudo-Pinot complexity
Old Bridge Rating: Fleurie always commands an unfair premium, but the Chignard version is one of the best. Much more intense than most wines of the area, but without losing the vibrancy and joy of the genre
Press Reviews: 89-90 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Michel and son Cedric Chignard’s unfined and unfiltered U.S. cuvee of 2009 Fleurie Les Mories (assembled from three different lots) features dark cherry, cassis, and purple plum tinged with mace, moss, wet stone, and bitterness of cherry pit. With a fine sense of richness but fine-grained tannins hidden beneath its surface, and an incipient sense of meatiness, this grips formidably and should prove worth following for at least 3-4 years."
