POWERFUL REDS; NEW WORLD (UNDER £15)
![]() |
2007 Now finished: CARMENERE RESERVA, Falernia. Elqui Valley, Chile
Alcohol Percentage: 15.2%
Area: Elqui Valley is the northernmost valley in Chile. Logically that would mean the hottest, but cool Pacific ocean breezes make it a relatively cool area
Grape Variety: Carmenere, 60% of it air-dried for 2 months before pressing (Amarone style); aged in (old) American oak for 8 months
Producer: Falernia is the only winery in Elqui, although others have planted vineyards. Owner Giorgio Flessati makes a very European style of Syrah (and Sauvignon Blanc), although this is a much richer, very 'new world' wine
Press Reviews: "100% from dried grapes. Similarly leafy, though oddly not as pronounced as the blend with Syrah. That herbal edge carries on the palate, with a certain leathery note but also a fine, very cool linearity with delicious chocolaty notes and a touch of sweetness and lift. Becomes chocolaty and lip-smacking, with great richness abut freshness too." - www.winepages.com
