PIEDMONTESE GRAPE VARIETIES; OVER £15

Italian; Piedmontese varieties - BAROLO, Bricco delle Viole, Vajra. Piedmont

2008 BAROLO, Cascina Nuova, Elvio Cogno. Piedmont

Alcohol Percentage: 14.5%
Area: The Langhe hills form the key wine area in Piedmont, home of both the revered white truffle and the great wines of Barolo and Barbaresco
Grape Variety: 100% Nebbiolo, matured in large Slovenian oak barrels for 2 years
Producer: Elvio Cogno are on the Bricco Ravera, a hill near Novello, with 11 hectares of vineyard around the winery. The Cogno family have been producing their own wine since 1990, having previously sold all their grapes to a large merchant
Cellar Potential: 2012-2018
Food Match: Nebbiolo is high in both tannin and acidity - it needs (and matches brilliantly) rich meat dishes. Venison would be perfect
Old Bridge Rating: Rare to find a young Barolo of such charm and accessibility. There's plenty of power but the edges are all nicely rounded.
Decant in advance and get out your biggest glasses - then watch the aromas unfurl
Press Reviews: 95 points 'Wine Enthusiast' Magazine (USA)The 2008
92 points, Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate: Barolo Cascina Nuova is subtle, elegant and refined. Sweet red cherries, flowers, herbs and mint are some of the nuances that emerge from this juicy, forward Barolo. Fine-grained, silky tannins frame the fragrant finish. The aromas and flavors are just a touch forward, but that should not pose any significant issues in a wine meant to be enjoyed upon release. This is a gorgeous, entry-level Barolo graced with exquisite elegance and class. Fine-grained tannins frame the silky, fragrant finish. The Cascina Nuova was aged in cask and neutral French oak barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. Proprietors Valter Fissore and Nadia Cogno are at the top of their game. I tasted a number of Baroli from cask, all of which point to a number of stunning wines in the pipeline. As outstanding as the Baroli are, the truth is that all of the wines in the estate’s lineup are fabulous from top to bottom. Cogno is one of Piemonte’s up and coming stars".
