2011 PHILIP SHAW NO 17. Orange, New South Wales, Australia

Bin:  2305

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Area:

Orange is a genuinely cool climate, west of Sydney. The highest temperature last summer was under 30C, less than the UK! The altitude is the key – these vineyards are up to 900m

Grape variety:

50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in French oak for 18 months (20% new oak)

Producer:

Philip Shaw is a veteran winemaker and general wine guru, having made his name with Rosemount when they were the ‘big name’ 20 years ago. He is now doing his own, very personal thing from his 47 hectares in Koomooloo

Old Bridge rating:

Serious and Bordeaux-like: firm tannins and real ‘structure’, but with enough fruit to give it balance and harmony
