2015 BARBARESCO, Curra, Bruno Rocca. Piedmont
Bin: 737
Alcohol percentage: 14%
The village of Barbaresco is not as famous as its rival Barolo but shares a similar spectacular setting amongst the rolling Lange hills. Curra is a south-west facing vineyard in Neive.
100% Nebbiolo, aged in French oak barrels for 12 months and then large Slavonian oak for another year.
Bruno Rocca’s parents bought the property in 1928. Bruno, who took over in 1978, is essentially a ‘modernist’ producer (he does use new, small French oak barrels) but he does retain elegance and structure in his wines. He has just 15 hectares and produces only 5-6,000 cases of wine a year.
This is not yet fully mature; just getting the classic tea leaf and violet aroma; full-bodied but (for Nebbiolo) relatively gentle and rounded.
LIMITED SUPPLY – CHECK WITH SHOP BEFORE ORDERING.
“Superb smoked-pork aromas on the nose, with an almost flinty reductive character. Deliciously rough-grained tannin and intense tar and bitter-chocolate flavours. Excellent length and intensity with all the classic hallmarks of great Nebbiolo – haunting, elaborate, delicious.” Richard Hemming MW on jancis robinson.com
