2021 LA ROCCA, Pieropan. Soave Classico, Veneto, Italy
Bin: 221
Alcohol percentage: 13%
Organic
Vegan
`La Rocca’ takes its name from the adjacent medieval castle and fortress that dominate the town of Soave, just east of Verona. The soil in La Rocca is unique in Soave in that it is a limestone outcrop (the same soil as in Valpolicella Classico) in a sea of basalt.
100% Garganega, picked late and fermented and aged for one year in large (2-5,000 litre) old oak barrels.
The Pieropan family has been producing wines in Soave since the 1860s. They were the first producer to bottle a wine with the name Soave on the label, in the early 1930s. Nino Pieropan took over from his father in 1970 and was the first to make a single vineyard wine, Calvarino, in 1971. Nino’s two sons, Andrea and Dario, now work with him running the estate.
Despite its seductive richness when young, La Rocca has proved its ageing capacity year after year. Keep for up to 10 years.
Is this Italy’s most consistently excellent white wine? Retains classically Italian freshness and drinkability, whilst also being a manifestly concentrated and serious wine for contemplation (and can be aged).
Decanter Magazine on the 2018 – April 2020 –
“Full of restrained, fresh apricot fruit in a kind of Marsanne-Roussanne style. Lemon-leaf freshness, dried banana and the toastiness of the oak on the nose, silky and delicate with moderate yet refreshing acidity; vibrant and imperceptibly tannic. Drink 2020-40.” 95/100
“95 points. Aromas of chamomile, dried pineapple, preserved lemon, toasted almond and beeswax. It’s medium-to full-bodied with tangy acidity. So concentrated, layered and phenolic. Keeps going. Yet, it remains agile and vivid. From organically grown grapes.” James Suckling, February 2021
