2015 MOULIN-à-VENT, Chateau des Jacques, Clos du Grand Carquelin. Beaujolais

Bin:  500

Alcohol percentage:  14.0%

Area:

Clos du Grand Carquelin has a southern exposure and is dominated by granitic sands that are deeper and a little bit heavier, with more clay present than its neighbours. This tends to produce a richer style.

Moulin-à-Vent is often referred to as the “King of Beaujolais” and is considered to be the most Burgundian Cru of Beaujolais – by that with almost Pinot Noir characteristics. The delimited area is celebrating its 100th birthday!

Grape variety:

100% Gamay.

Producer:

Château des Jacques is one of the greatest Beaujolais estates and is owned by the Burgundy House of Louis Jadot, located in the “Cru” of Moulin-à-Vent. With holdings totalling nearly 29ha there are 6 distinct parcels or “Clos”, each with its own distinct terroir.

Vintage:

This is an amazing example of mature Cru Beaujolais from a fantastic vintage. Following a very cold winter, 2015 had a mild spring and hot summer tempered by a cooler autumn with some refreshing rains. Yields were low and the wines have bold fruit flavours and plenty of structure and texture.

The grapes were partly destemmed, then vinified in vats with pumping over, followed by aging in French oak barrels for 12 months (15% new). This is a Cru Beaujolais of the highest class, with real depth of (cherry) fruit, soft spice and a creamy, mouthcoating texture and long, savoury finish.

Maturity potential:

Although you can drink now there is plenty in the tank to age and develop further over the next 5-10 years. This is a serious and authentic red Burgundy. No need to decant but could open for an hour or so to breathe before pouring.
