2014 OBERHÄUSER BRUCKE SPÄTLESE, Dönnhoff. Nahe, Germany

Bin:  168

Alcohol percentage:  8.5%

Area:

Brucke is an east-facing vineyard in the village of Oberhäuser, the only vineyard area on the south side of the Nahe river. The Nahe region may be less famous than the Rhine or Mosel, but its best wines are classically perfect Rieslings – an unmissable evocation of slatey minerality

Grape variety:

Riesling, fermented in large old German barrels (no influence of wood in the wine of course)

Producer:

Helmut Dönnhoff is one of the greatest winemakers in Germany (and therefore the world). He makes dry, off-dry and fully sweet wines which all combine real concentration with beguiling delicacy. In 2005 he was ‘Wine Personality of the Year’ in Robert Parker’s ‘The Wine Advocate’

Old Bridge rating:

Medium-dry Riesling at its most refined and elegant

Press review:

94 points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: “Lemon, grapefruit, red raspberry and persimmon rise from the glass of 2007 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spätlese, whose palate dynamics seem like chamber music after the thundering, orchestral Kupfergrube. Saline and wet stone mineral notes as well as deep, malty, nut oil richness compliment the berry and citrus and the finish here is simply ravishingly intricate. Look for 20 or more years of fascination.”
