2022 VILANA, Lyrarakis. Crete, Greece

Lyrarakis are in the hillsides (at 600m) of east-central Crete, a little south and east of Heraklion.

100% Vilana, organic vineyard on loam and clay soils, macerated on the skins for 48 hours, then fermented cool in stainless steel tanks, full malolactic, no oak.

Lyrarakis Estate is a family-owned business, started in 1966. It single-handedly ‘saved’ three indigenous grape varieties (Dafni, Plyto and Melissaki) and produces other native Greek examples like Vidiano (which Old Bridge clients will be familiar with) and Assyrtiko, the best known of them.

Winemaker is Myriam Ambuzer and exports are handled by Effie Kallnikidou, who gave a brilliant presentation to our staff in July 2022.

Another option alternative to Assyrtiko from Santorini. Vilana is more aromatic and openly fruity than Vidiano, with fine citrus and red apple notes and a lovely texture. A fine and authentic Mediterranean wine.
