2017 CHENIN BLANC, Vineyard Selection, Klein Zalze. Stellenbosch, S Africa
Alcohol Percentage: 13%
Area: Stellenbosch is the historically great vineyard region within S.A., although recently challenged by the impressive old vines of Swartland and cool climate styles from nearer the coast in Elgin and Hemel-en-Aarde.
This wine came from low yielding bush vines in the Helderberg and Stellenbosch Berg regions.
Grape Variety: Chenin Blanc, given skin contact before pressing, then fermented cool, initially in stainless steel, but transferred half way through the ferment to barrel and matured in oak for 7 months, on the lees, with 20% new wood.
Producer: Klein Zalze ('litte salt') is owned and managed by ex lawyer Kobus Basson. Winemaker since 2014 is Alastair Rimmer whose impressive CV includes a viticulture degree at Stellenbosch University before experience at Overgaauw, Agusta and Vergelegen in South Africa, Spy Valley in NZ, Juan Gil in Jumilla, Diablo Grande in California, Belvidere Estate in South Australia, and finally as Head Winemaker at Darling Cellars.
Old Bridge Rating: Light on its feet (at only 13%), but this is a richly textured Chenin at a great price - it will improve (and become richer) over the next 2/3 years.
