2009 Now finished: "UPSIDE DOWN", Sine Qua Non. Ventura, California

Bin: 800
Alcohol Percentage: 15.6%
Grape Variety: Grenache, matured in new French oak
Producer: The eccentric Manfred Krankle makes wine in the suburbs of Ventura California, in a winery described by Robert Parker as "a set scene from the movie Mad Max". Each is produced in minute quantities from impossibly low yields, bought in from trusted vignerons in the central coast area. With little estate fruit to speak of and constantly changing tastes Manfred Krankle rarely makes the same wine twice, prefering to be able to chop and change vineyards as he sees fit. While this is an unorthodox approach for a quality producer it doesn't seem to affect the quality of his wines, which regularly receive Parker scores in the high 90's, very often reaching the mythical 100 mark. As Krankl himsels says "People buy Sine Qua Non, they don't give a toot where it's from"

Press Reviews: 94-96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"It is structured, dense, quite closed, and (obviously, this being a barrel sample) not as exciting as the wines tend to be from bottle. It is a more earthy, French style of Grenache from Krankl, with a more restrained personality, which I think is in keeping with the vintage character...His meticulous craftsmanship and phenomenal attention to detail, both in the vineyard and in the winery, have been increasingly noticeable over the last decade. He seemed to hit full stride about eight or nine years ago, and what has unfolded since then is an absolutely brilliant succession of true works of genius...Grenache, as Krankl would be the first to say, is by far the most challenging grape varietal to make majestic wine from, and unequaled in difficulty by any other grape in the world except Nebbiolo. That’s why we see so little of it from great terroirs."
95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"Bright purple. Highly complex aromas of black raspberry, cherry pit, licorice and black pepper, complemented by more exotic hints of apricot and white flowers. Suave and juicy on entry, then alluringly sweet and vibrant in the mid-palate, with vivid red and dark fruit compote, lavender and Indian spice flavors. Finishes very long, with terrific energy and clinging spiciness."
