2008 CASK 23, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars. Napa Valley, California
Alcohol Percentage: 14.5%
Area: Stag's Leap is the name of both the winery and the sub-district of Napa Valley. This estate and it's then winemaker Warren Winiarski won worldwide renown when their 1973 won the famous 1976 wine tasting at which California Cabernets were pitted against the five Bordeaux 'first growths'. Stag's Leap Wine Cellars has maintained exemplary consistency since then.
The Stag's Leap district is a hillside region just south of Oakville, east of the town of Yountville, and home to some of Napa's finest reds.
'Cask 23' is their top wine, a blend of the best grapes from SLV and Fay vineyards
Grape Variety: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 20 months in French oak, mostly new oak
Cellar Potential: 2015-2025, at peak from around 2018
Old Bridge Rating: Top Napa Cabernet is of course over-priced (almost as much as top Bordeaux!) But there is no denying the fabulous quality of some of the great wines like this genuine 'icon' of the area
Press Reviews: 92-94 points, Robert Parker: “The outstanding 2008 CASK 23 Estate may be the finest CASK 23 made since the late eighties and early nineties. It will be in bottle by the time this report is read. A deep ruby/plum/purple color is accompanied by notes of sweet plums, black currants, cherries, spice box and cedar. The wine possesses beautiful texture, a full-bodied richness and a long, natural finish. It should drink well for 15 or more years.”
