2022 CORDON CUT, Mt Horrocks. Clare Valley, Australia (Half Bottle)
Bin: 909
Alcohol percentage: 11.5%
Clare Valley, a relatively cool area home to thrilling dry riesling (the best in the new world), some fresh reds and this lively sweet white.
100% Riesling, the vine cane ‘cut’ when mature, allowing a natural drying process in the open air.
Stephanie Toole has run Mt Horrocks since 1993. She has just 10 hectares, all produced to exacting standards in both the vineyard and winery. The perfect example of the over-used term “hand-made”.
Sweet but not heavy (around 160 grammes of sugar per litre) with thrilling freshness beneath. This is outstanding in a lighter style.
Gold or Silver Medal for the many years in the Decanter World Wine Awards.
16.5 points, www.JancisRobinson.com – “Marmalade, lime pickles, very attractive pure floral character, thick viscosity offset by fine acidic finish. Luscious, indulgent, delicious.”
94/100 from Andy Howard MW in Decanter Magazine – “The wine shows remarkable purity and elegance. Still very youthful, the concentrated apricot-dominated palate also has pear and cinnamon notes. A touch of botrytis added further complexity” – 94/100.
