2017 ECLIPSE, Drew Noon. McLaren Vale, South Australia

McLaren Vale is home to Australia’s juiciest, ripest, most open-hearted Shiraz. Noon is based in Southern Vales, south of Adelaide. His Grenache is from 70 year old bush vines on the estate. The Shiraz and Cabernet come from Langhorne Creek, about 45 minutes away.

90% Grenache, with 6% Shiraz and 4% of the Spanish grape Graciano; aged in French and American oak (20% new) for 16 months.

Drew Noon (Master of Wine, one of very few in Australia) makes just 3,000 cases a year and little comes to the UK.

Just now reaching a good level of maturity, at its best around 2025.

Huge richness and alcohol, yet soft and graceful overall.

Decant in advance and drink with big, spicy food – Drew recommends chorizo sausages.
