2021 Temporarily out of stock: MALAGOUSIA, Ktima Gerovassiliou. Epanomi, Greece

Bin:  141

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Vegan

Area:

From Thessalonika in northern mainland Greece, on the slopes of Mt Epanomi

Grape variety:

100% Malagoussia, around half fermented and matured in used French oak, the other half in stainless steel, all kept on the lees for several months before bottling

Producer:

Evangelas Gerovassiliou runs his family estate of 70 hectares and has almost single-handedly revived the fortunes of this ancient grape variety, which was almost extinct in 1971 when he re-planted it

Maturity potential:

Drink within 5 years of the vintage

Old Bridge rating:

Unpronounceable but irresistible. Reminiscent of a top quality Viognier but with more freshness and a hint of pine and spice. Very Perfumed with creamy texture and impressive richness. Over-delivers at its price level

Food match:

Great aperitif or match to spicy nibbles; also coping well with notoriously wine-unfriendly dishes like asparagus and globe artichokes

Press review:

For the 2016:
Silver medal, Decanter World Wine Awards 2017 – “An elegant wine with a powerful nose of raspberries and roses. A big, creamy mouthfeel with a long, dry finish and lots of spice. Excellent!”
White Wine Trophy, ‘Wine Merchant Awards’ 2017.
Gold Medal, Sommelier Wine Awards 2017.
