2005 COTEAUX DU LAYON, Moulin Touchais. Loire Valley

Bin:  910

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Area:

South-west of Saumur, around Martigné-Briand and Tigné, on the very edge of the Coteaux du Layon appellation (for many years a great source of sweet wines at relatively low prices).

Grape variety:

100% Chenin Blanc, late picked but not too late, matured for a couple of months in vats and then left to age very slowly in bottle.

Producer:

150 hectare estate, now run by 8th generation Jean-Marie Touchais. They produce a range of cheaper wines and also sell off much of their harvest. Just the best plots are kept for the famous ‘Moulin Touchais’.

Old Bridge rating:

Delicately ripe; mature, complex, semi-sweet Chenin Blanc

Press review:

“Smoky, spicy, burnished gold nose and the richness of a big botrytis vintage for the region – 50-60%. Honeyed cedary complexity. Tastes very very young and needs at least another 10 years though it is delicious now – pure but spicy and really intense. Terrific freshness of honeyed quince on the finish. RS 95 g/l.” 17.5/20 – by Julia Harding MW on jancisrobinson.com in 2015
