Now finished: PALO CORTADO, Almacenista ‘Cayetano del Pino’, Lustau (50cl bottle)

Bin:  945

Alcohol percentage:  21%

Producer:

One of Lustau’s ‘Almacenista’ sherries. Almacenistas are small family-owned business operations, often run as a ‘weekend job’ by local people with normal jobs (accountants, doctors etc). These families traditionally sold their wines to the big Sherry houses, where they were blended into large volumes. As their wines were produced in tiny quantities and were often superb, Lustau decided to negotiate to buy and bottle them separately.

Old Bridge rating:

Palo Cortado is about half way between a Fino and an Oloroso – dry and fresh but a hint of nuts and plenty of spice. Not an ‘easy’ style but a fascinating sipping drink for the open-minded.

Press review:

Chris Kissack, ‘The Wine Doctor’: “What a lovely toasted orange-amber hue – and what a nose! A gentle but complex interplay of vanilla toffee and pepper, cured meats, earth and burnt wood. A beautifully balanced entry, quite elegant and almost ethereal, yet developing a gentle creaminess through the midpalate. A little grip behind it, before it fans out on the finish to give a firm, sweetly ripe impression, leading into a complex length. This is quite stunning; I am very impressed. 18.5/20”
Decanter Magazine’s ‘Most Exciting Wines of 2018’ – “Deep amber, with a marvellous mix of nuts. Rich but dry, with peach skins and piercing acid lift. Excellent” – Oz Clarke, 96 points.
