2018 PINOT NOIR, Tolpuddle. Tasmania, Australia
Alcohol Percentage: 13.5%
Area: Made by Shaw and Smith (famous for their winery in Adelaide Hills, South Australia) in cool-climate Tasmania; fresh, modern style. The vines are actually from Coal River Valley and was first planted in 1988.
Grape Variety: 100% Pinot Noir, a quarter fermented as 'whole bunches', all matured in French oak for 9 months (about a third new oak).
Cellar Potential: Will age gracefully until at least 2025.
Old Bridge Rating: Early vintages of this, like many 'ultra-modern' new world Pinots, were a little skinny. This now has the perfect balance of cool-climate freshness and pure, beautiful Pinot Noir fruit.
Press Reviews: "Bright, clear crimson; this is right up there with the best of the best from a great Tasmanian vintage, sharing the alluring, perfumed fruits and the integrity of high quality tannins proficing the structure for a long future. There is a purity to the red and black cherry/berry fruits that shines through the portals of the savoury/spicy tannins. A luminous future will richly repay those who are patient." James Halliday, The Wine Companion.
