Rhône and southern France - CHÂTEAUNEUF DU PAPE, Les Quartz, Le Clos du Caillou

Sorry This bottle is currently not available.

2009 Now finished: CHÂTEAUNEUF DU PAPE, Reserve, Le Clos du Caillou. Southern Rhône

Bin: 800
Alcohol Percentage: 14.5%
Area: The most famous village in the southern Rhône, named after a new palace built for Pope John XXII in the 14th century. In 1923 it became the first region to adopt a system of regulations to ensure quality - this became the basis for the Appellation Contrôlée system for the rest of France. Its broad, ripe, spicy style (and its easily pronounceable name) has made it a favourite in both the UK and the US.
Clos du Caillou are based in Courthezon and this, their top wine, comes from a single vineyard called LaGuigasse
Grape Variety: 60% Grenache, 40% Mourvedre. Picked late (1st and 2nd October) and fermented together in old oak before maturation in 'demi muid' oak (all older wood) for 18 months
Producer: Clos du Caillou is a 45 hectare estate in Châteauneuf du Pape, making brilliant wine balancing the best of traditional and modern (we have bought a big parcel of their 2009s). It is run by Sylvie Vacheron, following the tragic early death of her husband Jean-Denis in 2002. They are organic and now converting to biodynamism
Press Reviews: "Dark cherry red. Very refreshing and lively without any exaggeration, except the high alcohol. Not especially tannic until some fine tannins at the very end, but winsome and chock full of fresh, ripe fruit." www.jancisrobinson.com
