SWEET WINES: LIGHT AND LIVELY
2013 LATE HARVEST SAUVIGNON BLANC, ‘The Brothers’, Giesen. Marlborough, New Zealand (Half bottle)
"Sauvignon Blanc for this wine came from Giesens Alma St Vineyard, in the Rootstock Block. To encourage botrytis the vineyard was not sprayed. However it was netted to protect it from birds, which allowed the grapes to be left to hang on the vine. The weather conditions didn’t favour botrytis and the fruit remained ridiculously clean until eventually it shrivelled so that the sugars were concentrated enough
to pick for late harvest. The fruit was hand picked in July, crushed by foot before being basket pressed over a period of a week to extract the treacle like juice. The juice was
fermented slowly over the next two months by wild yeast until the residual sugar, acid and alcohol balance had been achieved. The wine was filtered without fining and hand bottled."
"Tasted alongside the excellent 2012 vintage this is a very similar style with perhaps just a touch more freshness and varietal character. Perfect balance of sweetness and acidity. Concentrated wine with energy"
93 points from The Wine Enthusiast:
"Thick, unctuous and impressive, this is one seriously sweet Sauvignon Blanc. Honey and bergamot notes mark the nose, while the palate features more citrus and folds in hints of pineapple as well. Long and sticky on the finish. (JC)"
