2016 PENCOPOLITANO, Pedro Parra. Itata-Cauquenes, Chile
Alcohol Percentage: 14.5%
Area: Itata and Cauquenes are 2 relatively unknown areas in southern Chile. Pedro Parra pioneered quality winemaking in the region and now it's the 'cool' part of Chile that everyone is talking about. The emphasis in the area is on less fruity, more savoury (less obviously new world, more restrained and complex).
Grape Variety: 65% Cinsault, 27% Carignan, 8% Pais; matured partly in older barrel and partly in neutral vessel; they want to retain the purity of the grapes with any oak influence.
Producer: Pedro Parra is a 'terroir specialist' - a vineyard consultant renowned throughout the world (he has worked with top vineyards as diverse as Meursault and Mendoza). This is his own (very small) family project.
Old Bridge Rating: The freshness you associate with Chile, but also spice, earth and genuine individuality.
Press Reviews: "It's a blend from Itata and Cauquenes. The wine is matured in 40% used barrels and one year in bottle before it's sold. Five different vineyards fermented and aged separately, and they were blended before bottling. Pedro Parra is an expert in terroir and here he searches for the purest expression of red granite soils; he does not want a variety to dominate the nose, so it's a multi-grape blend that includes three field blends." - The Wine Advocate.
Recommended by David Williams in The Observer Food Monthly as one of his 6 best 'hipster wines' - "Though the country is still dominated by large, play-it-safe corporations, adventurous small producers are starting to emerge in Chile. The work of soil specialist Pedro Parra, this is a gorgeously pure, floral red blend with a lick of salty freshness.”
