Light / bright reds - PINOT NOIR, Esk Vallley. Marlborough, New Zealand

2016 PINOT NOIR, Esk Valley. Marlborough, New Zealand

Bin: 413
Alcohol Percentage: 14%
Area: Marlborough, at the top of NZ's South Island, is of course the source of the majority of the Sauvignon Blanc that dominates the country's production and is the driver behind its success over the last 20 years.
The cool but sunny climate is, however, appropriate for various other varieties and of those tried so far Pinot has certainly done the best.
Central Otago may have a grander reputation but Marlborough Pinot can often be lighter, finer and more elegant.
Grape Variety: 100% Pinot Noir, matured for a year in French oak barrels (but no new oak).
Producer: Esk Valley is owned by the giant Villa Maria operation, but is independently managed. The winery is up on the north island, in Hawkes Bay, on a spectacular site overlooking the ocean.
Old Bridge Rating: Classic example of New Zealand Pinot Noir - light, bright, lively fruit; not as soft and rounded as California examples but, despite its lack of weight, a great food wine (particularly at lunchtime of course).
