Area: Central Otago on the south island is the ruggedly beautiful source of a lot of expensive and impressive (still) Pinot Noir.
From their website:
Akarua's 50 hectare site on Cairnmuir Road in Bannockburn, which lies at 270 metres above sea level. The soil fine and sandy with loam topsoil overlaying schist. Vines are 12 years old.
Grape Variety: 100% Pinot Noir. Cold soaked for five days before fermentation and given an extra six days on the skins post fermentation to give some extra ‘backbone’. Seven months maturation in French oak (10% new oak)
Producer: Owned by the Skeggs family and benefitting from the help of consultant Tony Jordan, who put Domaine Chandon on the map in Australia
