2015 ZWEIGELT, Sonnhof, Jurtschitsch. Kamptal, Austria
Alcohol Percentage: 12.5%
Area: Kamptal is much less well know than the Wachau but produces fine wines of all colours - and at sensible prices.
Grape Variety: 100% Zweigelt, matured briefly in large old oak casks (just to add a little complexity; no 'oakiness' desired).
Producer: Now in the hands of Alwin and Stefanie Jurtschitsch, who travelled and worked in France, New Zealand and Australia as part of their training to take over the family winery.
They have converted the farming to organics and cut back on the number of vineyards they use, so they can concentrate on only the best. They have moved the winery form the middle rank to the top division.
Old Bridge Rating: The Zweigelt grape producing a great version of the 'Beaujolais' ideal - bright, lively fruit but without being simple or over-confected; there's just enough complexity and tannin to make it a 'proper' red wine!
Press Reviews: "An interesting nose of black pepper spice, earth and crunchy red fruit leads into a lively red fruit palate with firm tannins and a sprightly acidic backbone." Decanter Magazine, 2017
