2014 SPENCER PINOTAGE, Lemberg. Tulbagh, South Africa
Alcohol Percentage: 15%
Area: Tulbagh Valley is next door to trendy Swartland, 125km north east of Cape Town.
Grape Variety: 100% Pinotage, aged in French oak for 18 months.
Producer: Established in 1971, the farm is owned and run (since 2001) by Henk du Bruyn & Suzette van Rensburg, with Niël Russouw the winemaker. They specialise in 'interesting' grape varieties (making for instance, a good Harslevelu).
Old Bridge Rating: Pinotage is not many people's favourite grape variety, but some producers are now making good examples without any of the 'burnt rubber' earthiness that blighted many in the 'traditional' style.
Despite the high alcohol this is not a blockbuster. It. has remarkable balance - and even charm - for a Pinotage.
Press Reviews: "...an impressive, modern Pinotage with violet, dark cherry and bramble flavours, sinewy tannins and subtle wooding". Tim Atkin MW, 92 points
