A R LENOBLE, Mag14, Grand Cru Chouilly, Blanc de Blancs. Champagne
Alcohol Percentage: 12.5%
Area: Lenoble are based in the village of Damery in the Cote des Blancs, south of Epernay, and specialise in wines made from the great Chardonnay-dominated villages of the area. This one is made entirely from the Grand Cru of Chouilly.
Grape Variety: 100% Chardonnay - 60% from the 2014 vintage, the rest from older reserve wines (see below). Around a quarter of the first fermentation is done in wooden barrel.
Producer: Antoine Malassagne, co-owner of this excellent house, is seriously worried about the effect of global warming on the unique style of Champagne. He has taken one small step forward by building up a stock of 'reserve wines' (the older wines that a house will add to the latest harvest when making a blend for a non-vintage cuvee) in magnum, rather than in tank. He strongly believes that these older wines stay fresher this way, ensuring the blend retains the youthful acidity that marks out all great Champagne, even when made in richer style.
So this wine, the majority from the 2014 vintage, is the first to use these reserve magnums.
Old Bridge Rating: A fine example of a grower's Champagne. The big houses can make great wines because of the variety of their sources and their blending expertise. This is all about the expression of one grape in one place. It's gently rich and very fresh - it will get better and better until 2024, if stored properly.
