2022 RIESLING, Watervale, Mt Horrocks. Clare Valley, S. Australia
Bin: 113
Alcohol percentage: 13%
Organic
Vegan
Clare Valley, a relatively cool area, home to thrilling dry Riesling (the best in the new world), some fresh reds and the occasional, lively sweet white (Mt Horrocks Cordon Cut is outstanding).
Stephanie Toole has run Mt Horrocks since 1993. She has just 10 hectares, all produced to exacting standards in both the vineyard and winery – both organic and biodynamic. The perfect example of the over-used term “hand-made”.
She also happens to be partner to Jeffrey Grosset, neighbour and probably the most highly regard Riesling producer in Australia.
Simply outstanding Australian Riesling. Bone-dry, crisp, but not as austere as many examples – there is delicacy and charm here.
“Greenish tinge. Pungent lemon-sherbet nose. Lots of substance and real depth. Edgy and persistent. A real mouthful. This should stand up to a wide range of dishes – even quite meaty ones. Still a little chewy at the moment.”
