2013 POMINO, Villa Petrognano, Selvapiana. Tuscany, Italy
Bin: 485
Alcohol Percentage: 14%
Area: Pomino is to the east of Florence, beyond the Chianti Rufina zone and at the foothills of the Appennines, on the border between Tuscany and Emilia Romagna. In 1716 Cosimo III de'Medici made the first law to protect Italian Italian wine districts, citing Pomino along with Chianti Classico, Carmignano and Valdarno Superiore.
Grape Variety: 60% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot; aged for 18 months, the Sangiovese in large (25hl), old oak casks; the Cabernet and Merlot in small French 'barriques'.
Producer: Selvapiana lease the land here from the owner of the Villa Petrognano, Cecilia Galeotti Ottieri.
Selvapiana is owned and run by Federico Giuntini Masseti - it has been in his family since 1827. He has 60 hectares of vines in Chianti Rufina, which is just a little further west, between Pomino and Florence. The consultant is the renowned Franco Bernabei.

Old Bridge Rating: The brightness and savoury quality of a Chianti, but with the extra polish and elegance of the classic French grapes. This is extremely successful in 2013.
