2012 Château KIRWAN, 3me Cru Classé. Margaux, Bordeaux (Magnum)
Alcohol Percentage: 13%
Area: Margaux, a commune within the Haut-Médoc, is renowned for producing Bordeaux's most elegant and graceful wines. Kirwan is a 37 hectare vineyard on the plateau of Cantenac, one of the highest points of the area (which is of course generally very flat, sloping gently down to the Gironde estuary).
Grape Variety: 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.
Producer: Kirwan is a 'Third Growth' in the 1855 classification. It's owned by the négociant firm, Schröder and Schÿler, and is now producing really fine wine, having been an 'under-performer' for most of the last century.
Press Reviews: "Forward, and already easy drink, the black cherry, smoke, coffee and earthy notes show up with little effort. Soft, smooth and easy to drink, this medium bodied wine is already quite charming. A few more years will add more to the wine, but it's going to be an early drinker. This bottle was popped and poured." Jeff Neve, thewinecellarinsider.com, writing in 2016.
