2017 MINERVOIS, Château Pinenc, Foncalieu. SW France
Alcohol Percentage: 13.5%
Area: Minervois is a well established region in the Languedoc, just east of Carcassonne and west of Narbonne. It's known for a full-bodied, typically southern style of red wine, but less wild and rustic than the wines of Corbières and Roussillon a little further south.
Grape Variety: 65% Syrah, 20% Carignan, 15% Vieux Grenache; matured only in steel - the emphasis is on freshness, so no oak used at all.
Producer: Pinenc is part of the Foncalieu group - a number of co-operatives in the Languedoc, covering 4,000 hectares of vines spread amongst 650 growers. We don't normally buy from such large producers but this is a quality operation with the ability to make wine with a true 'sense of place', at sensible prices.
Old Bridge Rating: Big, ripe, very 'southern', but fresh and balanced too.
