2018 HÁRSLEVELÜ, Lemberg. Tulbagh, South Africa
Alcohol Percentage: 13%
Area: Tulbagh is an up-and-coming area north of Stellenbosch and east of Swartland, 125 km north east of Cape Town. The summer days are hot, but cool nights allow for the growing of more aromatic varieties.
Grape Variety: 100% Hárslevelü (a key grape used for Tokaji in Hungary); aged for 4 months in 500 litre French oak barrels.
Producer: Established in 1971, the farm is owned and run (since 2001) by Henk du Bruyn & Suzette van Rensburg, with Niël Russouw the winemaker. They specialise in 'interesting' grape varieties.
Old Bridge Rating: Brilliant to see someone in South Africa working with such an unusual (and high quality) grape - and doing so with such sensitivity. This has breadth and spice, but with modest weight and plenty of freshness. Highly recommended.
