2016 ZINFANDEL, East Bench, Ridge. Dry Creek Valley, CaliforniaOrganic
Alcohol Percentage: 14.9%
Area: An old vineyard site in Dry Creek, Sonoma, just north of Healdsburg (very close to Lytton Springs); but re-planted (with bush vines) by Ridge in 2000. It's a warm area but cool, foggy mornings and sunny afternoons, together with clay, iron-rich soils which retain moisture and help the grapes ripen slowly. All this reins in the otherwise over-prolific Zinfandel vines.
Grape Variety: 100% Zinfandel, matured for a year in (old) American oak barrels.
Producer: Paul Draper's Ridge is perhaps the most respected winery in California. Even more so now that the three separate estates (Montebello, Geyserville and Lytton Springs) have their own wineries and so operate like a French 'Domaine' rather than a bigger operation.
Old Bridge Rating: Less well known than the 'field blends' of Lytton Springs and Geyserville, this has a more direct, charming fruit style and is very drinkable when young.
