2017 Now finished: ZWEIGELT, Villa Strass, Allram. Austria

Bin:  415

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Area:

Kamptal is less famous than the Wachau but produces many of Austria’s top whites and rivals Burgenland for reds. It’s the northernmost area in Austria, with the coolest climate and the biggest diurnal range, making for wines of freshness and brightness.
In the UK Austria is at last being recognised as a great white wine producing country; the reds are generally less ‘serious’ but Zweigelt like this rivals the best lighter reds from Beaujolais or northern Italy.

Grape variety:

Fermented cool without oak; around 10% ‘whole bunches’ used; all to maximise vibrancy and vivacity.

Producer:

From their website:
“In 1992, Michaela Haas-Allram took over her parents’ business and ever since has operated the winery together with her husband, Erich Haas. A modern basement facility over three floors, with perfectly succeeded integration of the old wooden barrel cellar and the traditional wine press house, as tasting and showroom creates a perfect balance between tradition and tomorrow”.
The 30 hectare estate is now run by the son Lorenz Allram, one of Austria’s many dynamic and well-travelled new generation of winemakers. He visited us in April 2018 to show his impressive range.
This wine is labelled Villa Strass as they reserve the Allram name for wines from estate-grown fruit.

Old Bridge rating:

Better value than any Beaujolais at this price.
