CAP CLASSIQUE, DeMorgenzon. Stellenbosch, South Africa
Alcohol Percentage: 12.5%
Area: Stellenbosch has long been the Cape's premium wine region. Now challenged by warm climate Swartland and cool climate coastal regions like Elgin, it can still produce top quality bottles and is perhaps working ever harder to do so.
Grape Variety: 100% Chenin Blanc; half fermented in oak, half in steel and kept for 11 months before bottling and second fermentation; with 18 months before 'disgorgement' (and a tiny 'dosage' of late harvest Chenin).
Producer: DeMorgenzon means 'morning sun'; it is owned by the Applebaum family and has achieved huge recognition for its wines in the last 10 years. Winemaker is the talented Carl van der Merwe.
Old Bridge Rating: Fantastic value. Champagne quality but with a different taste profile. Rich but fresh.
Press Reviews: "Creamy, slightly honeyed style, but with lovely purity and crisp acidity. Lively mousse and a luxurious texture, driven by layers of ripe, rich fruit" - Decanter Magazine, September 2019.
