BRÜNDLMAYER BRUT. Austria
Alcohol Percentage: 11.5%
Area: The label says the larger area 'Niederösterreich' but Bründlmayer are based in Kampal, the coolest Austrian region (and therefore most appropriate for making sparkling wine).
Grape Variety: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Grüner Veltliner! Fermented in large (old) Austrian oak cask before bottling and 18 months maturation 'on the lees'.
Producer: Willi Bründlmayer has long been the leading producer in the Kamptal region. They have 75 hectares, mostly running along the Danube. The vineyards have been certified as organic since 2015.
The business is now managed by the dynamic young MW Andreas Wickhoff.
Old Bridge Rating: Light (note the alcohol) but quite rich. Lovely hint of spice from the unusual varietal blend. Much rather drink this than another mid-priced Champagne.
